Public information subject files - Feature newspaper columns : Walter B. Jones, 1925-1963.

The Alabama Dept. of Archives and History collects and preserves records and artifacts that document the history of the state. Prior to 1981 the dept. maintained numerous vertical files that were created by various divisions within the dept. The subjects and content of these vertical files were determined by countless individuals employed by the dept. from ca. 1920 to 1981. This artificial series consists of newspaper clippings of the regular feature column by Judge Walter B. Jones. Born in Montgomery, Ala., on 1888 Oct. 16, Walter Burgwyn Jones was the son of Governor Thomas Goode Jones and Georgina Caroline (Bird) Jones. He attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute and the University of Alabama, obtaining his LL.B. degree from the latter in 1909. Jones enjoyed a long and distinguished legal career in Montgomery. He served in the state legislature as a representative from Montgomery County from 1919 to 1920. In 1920 he was elected a judge of the 15th Judicial Circuit and became presiding judge in 1935. Judge Jones founded Jones Law School in Montgomery in 1928. A prolific author, Jones wrote several legal textbooks, treatises, and articles, including a history of the Jones-Burgwyn family. He began a regular column, "Off the Bench," for the Montgomery Advertiser on 1925 Dec. 14. Except for an interruption from 1941 to 1947 to write a massive legal work, Jones continued this feature without payment until 1963 June. He died a bachelor on 1963 Aug. 1 after a prolonged illness.
